Kira, a Roborovski Dwarf Hamster

Posted on 08. Feb, 2010 by in Rodents

This is Kira, one of my new Robo hammies… she and her sister, Bianca, live together in a system of plastic bins, connected with tunnels. These are photos and videos from Kira’s first 2 days at home.

A pair of Robos can live together, as long as they have LOTS of space. They will need 2 wheels, 2 water bottles, & 2 dishes for food (because they are territorial animals.) It’s better if they are from the same litter (brothers) as they are more likely to get along nicely. At the 1st sign of serious fighting (blood, injury, constant bullying) separate them right away. Once separated, don’t put them back together. Best of luck! (^_^)

I use organic hemp bedding, and give them wads of cotton and shreadded white tissue to use for their nests.

Bonjour! Thanks for checking out my video –
At one time, I had 3 dwarf hamsters, & they were all very happy, living separately. Hams are, by nature, very terretorial. In the wild, dwarves live in small communities, but, their burrows are 6 ft. under ground & spread over a very large space! Keeping more than & in a cage/bin is possible, but, s/he will be quite happy to have the place all to her/himself.

I just got one dwarf hamster :)
And she seems quite confused, just wondering if yours lived happily on its own…?

I buy sand at the pet store.

It’s a kind of mineral sand, that is called “chinchilla” sand, as it is primarily marketed for chinchilla dust baths.

I would never use sand from the beach, or sand that was collected outside, randomly… sand from the beach is much too salty and filled with pollutions (dangerous! toxic to hamsters!)

The mineral “chinchilla” sand is clean, collected and refined in controlled manners, which ensures it is safe for your rodents.

where do u get sand for sand bath? is it some special, cleaned sand or is a regular sand from like anywhere outside?

To answer your questions :

1 — Hamsters don’t NEED sand baths, but, they do LOVE them! When I put the sand in a low, wide dish, just next to the wheel, they spend most of their non-running and non-digging time in their sand.

2 — You can connect as many bins together as you want. Just make sure that you have enough tubes to reach between them, or, if you are using 1 straight ube, make sure the holes are lined up properly.

Happy bin making! (^_^)

I hope your hamsters will be very happy! If you are getting 2, you will need 2 wheels ABSOLUTELY, & it’s recommended to have 2 water bottles & 2 food bowls, as hamsters can become territorial & one might bully the other away from his/her favourite drink/eating place. BE SURE TO GET THE SAME GENDER! There are enough little hamsters in the world who already need good homes & taking care of a litter (properly) is a lot of work. If you discover they are male & female, separate them RIGHT AWAY!

i have a robo ands ive had her for almost 3months shes very hard to flippin tame she lets me pet her but not a bigg fan of being held..

TheBonnieRose

… with a lot of patience! haha

We adopted Selene when she was a baby, so, she is extreemly tame & easy to hold.

Our Robo twins were adolescents (& from a petshop) so, they are less tame & difficult to hold (the breed, in general, is difficult, because they havn’t been domesticated very long.)

Have patience, offer food or veggies in your palm — keep calm, and try not to flinch your hand, or make fast movements, which can spook the hamster. Socialize EVERYDAY
